Self Discipline In a Busy World.

In a world of distractions, self discipline is a must have skill tone able to continue  with your life. Certainly most of us have found themselves procrastinating because of maybe video games or excessively watching YouTube videos and many other forms of entertainment. It makes you feel helpless and out of order. You want to do your homework or develop your career but you can’t stop playing video games. You want to learn a new language on YouTube but u keep wasting time on entertainment videos and end up spending the 2 hours you wanted for your new language achieving nothing. Having the urge to lose weight and follow a diet but you can’t resist the temptations of cupcakes.

In this article we’ll  help you overcome distractions and focus on what you want and how to get it with just 5 steps.

Step 1: Change Your Surroundings.

When trying to change something about yourself, a change in environment is usually better to help you overcome the temptations. We’re  instinctive even though we hate to admit it. Bad habits are usually driven by instincts so if you are staying in the same environment is, it’ll be much harder to leave whatever  you’re to avoid. For example, if you’re trying to learn a new language on YouTube and you keep straying away from the video, download it on  your mobile and leave your room. Turn off the WiFi and everything else and go sit in the balcony or in the living room. Go running outside while you’re listening to it. You could buy a book instead of the video and sit in a library or in the park. Be creative and choose the most thing you enjoy while trying to learn your new skill or finishing your studies.

Step 2: Removing Bad Habits First Then Replacing Them With Good Ones.

Good and Bad Habits

The popular saying ” Your cup is already full” or ” Empty your cup”are true. It’s almost impossible to add good habits on top of bad habits. You have to firstly remove the bad habits then replace them with good ones. Our example her of trying to learn a new language and working out but playing video games for prolonged hours is distracting you, start by trying to reduce the time spent on video games. Keep it only for 3 hours then start with your new skill that you wish to learn and in time, try to reduce the duration of distraction bit by bit. After a month, you’ll be accustomed to the new habit and find yourself having the need of continuing with it. This method will help implement your new skill into your brain without losing your entertainment time.

Step 3:  Short Time Milestones and Breaks.

To Do Lists
To Do Lists

You can’t expect yourself to be working for prolonged hours without degrading in work quality or forgetting what you studied. You should schedule breaks every milestone you put for yourself. For languages, if you wanna expand your vocabulary and you have 100 words that you need to memorize in a given day. Give yourself a 5 minute break each 20 to 25 words. That way you’ll progress your work more faster and not get the feeling of spending 3 hours without achieving anything.

Step 4: Schedule Everything.

By scheduling your day,  you’ll know exactly what you have to do for today and not rely on will-power or random bursts of motivation. A plan is always great if you want to achieve something because by dividing it into short term goals, you realize that you need to do this particular thing right now and not think about anything else or worry about the next step because you already know what to do. Knowing your purpose and goals save you a lot of thinking and hesitations which will in return mess with your moods and affect your working progress. Also while motivation and will power can help you get work done, it’s not reliable. Eventually you’ll get bored and tired and give up because motivation is temporary, however, self discipline is permanent.

Step 5: Enjoy The Process.

Enjoy the Process
Enjoy the Process of doing something you love

If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you’ll never achieve mastery in it. Most people go through their daily routines in order to maintain their large paycheck and not because they enjoy doing it. You need to find something you’re interested in and enjoy the challenges that come with it. That way, you’ll enjoy the learning experience that come along with it. Don’t just look at the end goal. All you have is the moment you’re living right now so you’ve got to enjoy it every way possible.

  1. Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
