The world celebrates the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web ( www). It was firstly created by the military when the ministry of defense decided to create ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency). Since then, it was developed many times by many project till it was officially announced in 1991.
The world wide web wasn’t available and free to use like it is now if it wasn’t for the efforts of those persons who fought for internet freedom. For more education and communication among people through digital libraries, educational and culture websites.
Here, we will talk about 5 men who contributed in making the internet how we see it today.
Tim Berners-Lee
Inventor of the web, a pioneer of the world wide web, one of the lead researchers and works as the manager of the World Wide Web Consortium (w3c).He also heads the Decentralized Information Group (DIG) in Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT) and a professor in the Electronics and Computer Science Department at the University of Southampton, UK. He also spends a good amount of time fighting for rights such as internet security and freedom especially after the government surveillance systems.
He says that if the government controlled the web, they’ll control the life of people because they will know of every move and will affect what they’re seeing to control people.
In an anniversary, he said that all people who were a part of the web should be proud of what they’ve achieved specially after this spirit of cooperation behind this astonishing development. However, this cooperation became threatened because the web has developed to be a vital technology in our daily lives.
Jimmy Wales
He’s an american internet entrepreneur and the founder of Wikipedia encyclopedia which is an important research source. In 2006, he was chosen to be one of the most influential persons in the world according to times magazine besides getting a honorary doctoral degree from the university of Maastricht in 2015.
He said that his main concern is providing a free access to information for all people. Every person in the world has the right to know about whatever he wants. Whether it’s history, science or politics, each person has the right to have an open window to learn and if someone has the authority, they should be using it to provide more freedom to people.
Aaron Swartz
He’s considered to be one of the most noticeable internet activists fighting for the freedom of information for internet users. He was involved in the development of the RSS and the founder of Reddit for sharing information and articles.
He also is one of the non profitable Creative Commons Organisation which helps unlocking the full potential of internet for a more innovative world.
His controversial death in January 2012 caused much attention to the importance of fighting for internet freedom.
Julian Assange
A computer programmer and an internet activist known for his Wikileaks website. Through it, he published a lot of sensitive information about the governments to the world.
He’s described as a very enthusiastic person, extremely intelligent and has an exceptional skill in computer deciphering.
He says that there’s a war waging on the future of this community. For most people, this war isn’t visible. One side has governments who spy on everything and the other side, there’re those talented cyberpunks who cipher and make public policies and from that, wikileaks was born.
Mark Zuckerberg
born in 1984 in New York, USA, the american programmer created Facebook with his colleagues at Harvard university.
His website facilitated the communication between people and spread knowledge and experiences which helped the general growth of the internet.
